The worst time to discover a weak network, failing receipt printer or missing password is while customers are waiting. Review the connected parts of your checkout system before the busy period begins.
Test the complete transaction path
Run a real test through the POS, payment terminal, receipt printer, cash drawer and any kitchen or label printer. A device appearing online does not prove the full workflow works.
Review network and power
- Confirm business-critical devices are on the intended network
- Check Wi-Fi coverage at every terminal and service area
- Label network and power cables clearly
- Use battery backup for essential network equipment where appropriate
- Document the restart order for the modem, router, switches and terminals
Know what still works offline
Ask the POS and payment providers what happens during an internet outage. Some systems offer limited offline modes; others stop completely. A properly configured secondary connection may keep the business operating.
Keep support details where staff can find them
Record vendor phone numbers, account identifiers and escalation steps without exposing passwords. Staff should know who to call and which devices they may safely restart.
